Citrine

September 13th, 2011

A quartz crystal or cluster which is yellow or orange in color is known as citrine. This stone gets its name from the French word “citron” which means “lemon”. It is a semi-precious stone and one of the most common forms of quartz after colorless quartz (rock crystal). It is also classified by gemmologists as an oxide. Citrine deposits are very rare and most of the gems sold as citrine in the market are treated amethysts. It is also known as golden topaz or smoky topaz as it resembles the topaz in color. Citrine gets its color from colloidal suspended hydrous oxide. The Madeira citrines are dark in color and are named after the Spanish wine which it resembles. Citrines get their golden color when amethyst naturally gets heated deep inside the earth.  Ancient Romans used citrines to make beautiful jewellery like necklaces, rings and ear-rings. In modern times citrine is the favoured stone for the budget minded women. It is usually sold as a substitute for the yellow sapphire in India.

The color of citrine ranges from straw and sun yellow to clay orange, to deep, wine colored Madeira red. In the past, the Madeira colored stones were the most valuable, but today, the more vivid yellows and oranges are the most popular. Natural bright yellow citrine is the rarest of the quartz varieties.

According to legend, Caesar’s legions had worn citrine on the chest when fighting to use the gemstones’ life saving property. This gemstone is also said to cleanse, purify and eliminate poisons found in the body.

Citrine has been popular for thousands of years and used to be revered for its rarity, though that has changed with time. The ancient Romans used it for beautiful jewellery and intaglio work. It was also very popular for jewellery in the 19th century. During the Art Deco period between World Wars I and II, large citrines were set in many prized pieces, including the massive and elaborate Art Deco inspired jewellery pieces made for big Hollywood stars such as Greta Garbo and Joan Crawford.

Nowadays however, the stone is not as rare, and thus, the use of citrine has little to do with opulence and luxury anymore. In fact, for years, Citrine became so cheap and plentiful, no one took it seriously. Now however, there is a full-scale renaissance for this gem. Its bargain price is no longer a handicap, but an asset, as it allows for use of very large stones in jewellery. As part of the trend, jewellery makers are using big, bold gems- many cut in a cubist manner, to give lots of splash for the money. Citrine has found favour with budget minded women looking to expand their wardrobes with affordable pieces of jewellery. When it comes to providing earth-toned colors for women on a budget, citrine has no real competition.

The main sources of citrine include Brazil, Argentina, Madagascar, Myanmar, Namibia, Russia, France, Scotland, Spain and the US.

Most citrine comes from Brazil, but almost all of the Brazilian material is heat-treated amethyst. Natural citrine can also be found in the Ural Mountains of Russia, in Dauphine, France, and in Madagascar. The inexpensive low grade amethyst is heated at high temperatures to produce the popular orange, reddish and sherry colored citrine. Darker colors are considered more valuable, including the medium golden orange and dark sherry-colors.

Citrine may be mistaken for the more expensive orangish-yellow topaz and, at times, may be sold as topaz by dishonest gemstone vendors. Due to this, citrine buyers are sometimes suspicious of any citrine and think it may actually be fake topaz.

Gems of Sri Lanka

July 27th, 2011

An increasing global awareness of the economic potential of gemstones has created an unprecedented demand for them.  It has led to an accelerated production drive and an intensified search for them in gem producing countries

Sri Lanka ranks with Myanmar, Brazil, South Africa and Thailand as one of the world’s most important gem bearing nations.  The story of Sri Lanka’s gems is as old as civilization itself.

The gems of Sri Lanka are woven in to his history. The Mahavansa, the ancient chronicle of Sri Lanka too mentioned about gems and jewellery. Indeed, the lord Buddha himself is sad to have had to come to Sri Lanka from India to settle a dispute between two kings, Chulodara and Mahodara, over a throne of gems.

King Solomon is reported to have had gems brought from this island to win the heart of beautiful Queens. The great traveller, Marco Polo, Was said to have been so awe struck by a priceless ruby in the possession of the king of Sri Lanka that he recorded it has been “ span in length, without a flaw, brilliant beyond compare.

Sri Lanka became known as Ratna Deepa (The Island of Gems). Some of the rarest precious stones in the world are found in abundance in the reach earth under our feet and the hills above us. Sri Lanka, geologically speaking is a very old country. Ninety percent of the rocks of the island are of Precambrian age, 560 million to 2,400 million years ago. The gems form in sedimentary residual gem deposits, alluvial deposits, metamorphic deposits, skarn and calcium-rich rocks. Other gems are of magmatic origin. Out of about 200 minerals that are classified as gemstones, around 75 varieties are found in Sri Lanka, making this small island one of the most important geographic locations in the world of gemstones.

Among the Several world famous gems Sri Lanka’s blue sapphire Weighing 466 carats. The largest known sapphire in the world. Weighing in at 19kg was also discovered here. Other famous gems include the Blue giant of the Orient, Weighing nearly 500 carats and the bluebell of Asia, which weighs in at 400 carats. The renowned Sri Lankan Star sapphire is on permanent display at the Museum of Natural History in New York, but due to an oversight, the stone has been called the star of India.

Throughout history Sri Lanka’s gems and jewellery have adorned the crown jewels of many a royal family. A gem- a 105 carat cat’s eye- discovered in a paddy field in Sri Lanka, gained fame among the royalty of Britain and was Successively Admired by Edward VII, George V, Edward VIII and Queen Elizabeth.

The process of mining for gems is begun at an auspicious time with a short religious ritual. The most common methods of mining are in pits and by tunnelling. Surface gemming and dredging depends on the location and the type of deposits stones are normally found in a layer of coarse pebbly material, which contains traces of clay and fine sand. This gravel containing gems is referred to as “illam” and is found just below the alluvial deposits.
The rarest gem in the world Alexandrite is found in Sri Lanka.

Gem pits are of two kinds. the shallow ones are well shaped and circular, whereas deep pits are rectangular. To prevent the walls of the pits from caving-in scaffoldings are made and the spaces filled with leaves. The water is then pumped out of the pit. If the “illam” vein runs horizontally, tunnelling has to be resorted to.

Another method of collecting illam is to place wooden poles across the river bed and standing on a pole with a long stick, a person drags the gravelly sand towards him. This is then collected in buckets.

Either way the gravel is then washed in large circular wicker buckets by immersing them in water and rotating them. This enables the light, ordinary pebbles and sediment to escape, leaving the heavier pebbles behind. Then the baskets are held against the sunlight and the sorting is carried out. Each illam brings forth a variety of stones. The principal source of Alexandrite, the rarest gem in the world is Sri Lanka it was first pound in the Urals in 1830 and is named after Czar Alexander II who come of age on the day it was found. This stone shines green in natural light but turns raspberry red in artificial light.

The cat’s eye is another stone which is considered valuable and rare. It derives its name from fact that a silvery line runs across its greenish-gray surface, giving it a remarkable resemblance to the eye of a cat. The rarest type is the black cat’s eye.

Sri Lanka can boast of having 17 varieties of precious and semiprecious stone. The most notable are:-

Blue Sapphire blue stone with a silvery streak, said to protect its Wearer.

Topaz or Pushkaraj is a cold gem. It improves vision, gives life security, protects ones from poverty, removes adversity, misfortune and melancholy.
The girls in the family who have reached the age of marriage should wear yellow sapphire because it removes the delay in their way of marriage. However a spouse (husband or wife) should wear for a happier conjugal life. It helps to pacify the anger of its wearer by providing sharp sightedness. It strengthens the bondage of friendship. It shows its influence by removing the danger of accidental death.
In diseases, Topaz cures diarrhea, gastritis, ulcer, rheumatism, jaundice, insomnia, heart troubles, impotency, gout, arthritis, pain in knee joints, etc. Topaz should be worn in gold, on 1st finger of right hand on Thursday. The weight should be of 7 or 13 grams.

Wearing your yellow sapphire for the first time
Your sapphire should be first worn on a Thursday during the first hour of the sunrise since Guru or Jupiter himself rules it. Never try your gemstone at the jeweler’s place.
On the first day you wear the stone, the Moon should be in a waxing phase and the Guru in its own sign exalted or in a friendly sign, in an exalted Navamsa.
It is best if Guru is in conjunction with, or in an angle with the Moon. A nearby astrologer can throw more light on these mystifying concepts. Select an auspicious time to wear your stone that can be worked out as per your horoscope. Never choose the day by using a general panchang or almanac. The auspicious time published in a panchang is not specific and need not suit you and your horoscope.

Mantra for yellow sapphires
Your gem holds no meaning and is just a piece of expensive stone, if you do not follow certain norms before you start wearing it.

First wash your gem in rose water.
Keep it immersed in milk for one hour during the first hour from sunrise starting from one Thursday to the next Thursday.
Then keep it in rose water until the chosen date.

On the auspicious day you should first invoke the blessings of Lord Vinayaka (Ganesh) and recite 108 names of Lord Ganesha followed by mantra that are associated with planet Jupiter or Guru. These mantra puts life to the Yellow Sapphire that happens to be the gem stone that Lord Guru or Jupiter wears on his crown.

While reciting the mantra, you should concentrate on the form of Guru or any form of Guru you are more familiar with.

So recite one of the following mantra 108 times.

OM GURU DEVAYA VIDHMAHE, PARABRAHMANE DHEEMAHEE, THANNO GURU PRACHODAYAT.

(OR)

OM HRAAM HREEM HROUM SAHA BRUHASPATHAYE NAMAHA

This mantra should be recited every Thursday during the first hour from sunrise for 9 continuous Thursdays. Guru or Jupiter is the preceptor of the Devas or Gods. His other names are Indra and Brahma, the ceator. His vehicle is the elephant. His legume is the chick peas, which can be included in your poojas.

It would be ideal to request a qualified purohit to do all the necessary poojas in case you find all these a little complicated. For more details and guidance please consult your astrologer.

Sapphires are found in India, Brazil, Sri Lanka, Russia, Thailand, Australia, U.S.A, U.K., Nepal, Mexico, Zambia and Nigeria. In India, Sapphires are found in Jammu. These are considered to be the best in the world. Few Sapphires are also found in Orissa but they are not of very high quality.

IDENTIFICATION

Natural Sapphires carry within them clear signs of slow crystallization. Some of the external elements sometimes remains preserved in the Gem which helps its identification. Like all other precious gems it should have inclusions which should be visible to the naked eye or under magnification. Otherwise, it is a piece of glass or a synthetic substance.
The inclusions are generally like ‘feathers’ or are like finger print impressions. Liquid inclusions looking like lace are also sometimes visible. Synthetic Sapphires are very common in the market and many traders in order to earn fast money sell them as originals. These are very clear and under magnification show bubble like inclusions. Sometimes feather like inclusions have also seen but they shine abnormally under light.

Gems & Gemology

September 24th, 2010

Gems are very well known all over the world for their magnificent beauty and value. Not only do they add a beauty and charm into a person’s personality, but also may play a very significant role in shaping the present and future. They have a great importance in Vedic Astrology or the Science of Lights. It is now very well known that the light is composed of seven different rays, that is, Violet, Indigo, Blue, Green, Yellow, Orange, and Red. These rays are also a constituent of the pretty rainbow.

If the ancient Indian text, the “Karam Puran” is to be taken into account, then the seven planets are considered to be condensation of the above mentioned seven different coloured cosmic rays. The planet Earth was supposed to have on it the greatest condensation of the cosmic rays in the form of natural gem stones found on it. These gem stone s are present in a large variety and are believed to attract rays of different kinds towards them. This property of the gems makes them an ideal method to be used for reducing the sufferings that are led by mis-positioned planets in a person’s birth chart.

GEMS are precious stones which are loaded with specific energies. Gems may take in different colored rays and filter them all, but finally they keep a specific ray only. For example, Ruby is a gem in Dark Red color. This gem will filter all other colors except Red, which is accumulated into it. When we wear Ruby, we get the Red colored rays being absorbed into our body, and hence the effect of these rays will produce certain results. It has been experimentally proved that the Red color increases Will-power, Anger, Dynamism, Blood flow, and the Soul is strengthened. So it is better if the people with a lack of confidence and with feelings of inferiority wear this gem. The gems are connected to Planets in Astrology. Of course Astrology advocates that everything in this world is connected to Planets finally. What is the relation between gems and Planets? Each planet has a type of energy which is fully absorbed in a particular gem on the earth. Thus Sun’s energy is absorbed in Ruby, Moon’s energy is available in Pearl, Mars’s is in Coral, Jupiter’s is in Yellow Sapphire, Saturn’s energy is seen is Blue Sapphire, Mercury’s is in Emerald, Venus’s is in Diamond, Rahu’s is in Hessonite and Kethu’s is in Cat’s eye.

When there are any deficiencies in the energy levels of a Planet in a human being, the related problems concerned to that Planet will result. So it is wise to fill these deficient energies, by wearing gems. This is the route to achieve health, happiness and prosperity in life.

Ruby: Ruby is generally available in dark red, and glows like morning sun. Wearing a Ruby protects a person from afflictions of Sun, heart weakness, headaches, general ill health, eye troubles, blood pressure etc.

Pearl: It is in white color with a streak of oceanic blue. Wearing a pearl protects a person from diseases of lungs and stomach, water-born diseases, emotional problems, and impulsive decisions.

Coral: A good coral will be red in color. It is used to get rid of skin diseases, fevers, accidents, abortions, burns and enmity with others.A Coral increases practicality, quickness in doing the things and vigor.

Yellow Sapphire: It would be yellow or white in color. Yellow is preferred. It is used to get the grace of God, children, education, and high position in job or business. It is used to get success in legal problems, digestion and liver problems.

Blue Sapphire: This is in dark blue or black in color. Nervous problems, delays, serious ill health, diseases of teeth, ears, rheumatism, aging, problems in service and business can be controlled by wearing a Blue Sapphire.

Emerald: This gem is in green color, causing the power of intelligence, presence of mind, right decisions in business, communication, speculation, scientific education. It can be worn to escape from madness, stammering, and nervous problems.

Diamond: This is a very precious stone with bright white color. Delays in marriage, bad married life, diseases of reproductive system, lack of luxuries in life can be overcome by using a diamond.

Hardness of diamond: 10, Specific gravity: 3.52, Refractive index: 2.4175.

Hessonite: This is in honey color and eliminates problems like cholera, dysentery, hallucinations, and problems from evil spirits.

Cat’s eye: This is in white color with a circular band around in grass color. It alleviates problems like paralysis, contaminated diseases, infections, intestinal disorders and increases religious nature in a person.

Any gem should be purified and then loaded with positive vibrations of concerned planet, by chanting the relevant Mantra during a period of time. Then it should be worn in a ring to a suitable finger of right hand on an auspicious day. But first of all take the help of an Astrologer to determine which gem is suitable for you. Keep in mind that if you wear an unsuitable gem, you are inviting more problems.

Color Therapy Healing with Seven Special Gemstones

September 9th, 2009

Color Therapy Healing via gems, gemstones are explored in this color thearpy article.
color therapy healing spectrum

The Earth’s gems play a surprisingly central role in how color functions, not only in the mineral kingdom but in life itself. This role has far-reaching implications for the healing arts, therapy, and energy medicine. Indeed, the subject of color healing is such a significant part of gemstone energy medicine that it deserves several books of its own. Thus, what follows is simply a brief introduction to this vast topic.

Color rays are the most fundamental building blocks of all living things. Just as visible light is comprised of the seven colors of the rainbow, so is the life force – the force that enlivens, sustains, and nourishes everything that lives. We human beings are manifestations of this vital force. Thus, at the deepest level we too are made up of spectrums of these seven color rays.

Each color ray has a specific purpose, and all seven color rays are essential for life. Being continually supplied with and nourished by a proper balance of color rays is essential to every aspect of health. In an optimally healthy person, all seven colors are present in balance. Any deviation from that balance moves a person away from ideal health and an optimal expression of life – and will ultimately lead to disease and disharmony.

Certain special gemstones can help us correct such color-ray imbalances and begin to help us heal and grow in the deepest way possible.

The History of Gem Therapy

September 6th, 2009

Modern science recognises the potencies of gems in their technological uses, such as the use of crystals in watches, computers, and lasers. However, their subtle uses to cure disease, balance human emotions and infuse other potencies to the wearer are not recognised by western science and medicine. Thorough study of this subject has shown that the Vedic uses of gemstones in astrology and medicine have been proven by the experiences of countless people, both in ancient and modern times. The science of planetary gemmology is used as a most effective healing tool within the eastern, or sidereal, system of astrology. Over a billion people throughout Asia and the world take advantage of this system to counteract imbalances throughout their lives, whether they be physical, mental, or spiritual.
