August 31st, 2011
Platinum, Ruby and Diamond Ring, Cartier: Sold for $1,314,500

International bidding drove strong prices at Doyle New York’s April 13, 2011 sale of Important Estate Jewelry. On the block was a spectacular ruby ring by Cartier from the collection of Alice Appleton Hay (1887-1987) the daughter-in-law President Lincoln’s private secretary John Hay. Set with a natural Burma ruby of 6.29 carats, the ring attracted a great deal of international interest in the weeks leading up to the sale. Strong competitive bidding drove its price past the pre-sale estimate of $60,000-80,000 to reach for a staggering $1,314,500. At over $200,000 per carat, this is one of the highest prices per carat ever achieved for a ruby at auction.

Another noteworthy lot from the Hay Collection was very rare and important gold pocket watch and perfume sprinkler in the form a miniature flintlock pistol that achieved $482,500, several times its estimate of $100,000-150,000. When the trigger is pulled on this circa 1805 pistol, a flower emerges from the barrel sprinkling the target with perfume. Attributed to the Geneva firm of Moulinie, Bautte & Cie and manufactured for the Chinese market, this piece is one of fewer than fifteen examples known to exist.

A circa 1920 platinum and diamond long chain necklace from the Hay Collection was noteworthy for the quality and size of the diamonds and the workmanship. Totaling 48.00 carats and measuring 55 inches, the necklace achieved a stunning $452,500, many times its estimate of $50,000-70,000.

Bearing an Imperial provenance was an antique silver, gold and diamond Currant Leaf ‘en pampille’ brooch, circa 1850, that soared past its estimate of $50,000-70,000 to fetch $332,500. The brooch was part of the French Crown Jewels sold at an historic auction in the Louvre in 1887 following the fall of Napoleon III and his wife, Empress Eugenie. Tiffany & Co. was the largest purchaser at the sale, successfully buying almost a third of the crown jewels. These included two lots from the spectacular Currant Leaf diamond parure made by Bapst, the French Crown Jeweler, for Empress Eugenie. The brooch came with an antique box from Tiffany’s Paris showroom and an inscribed calling card from the legendary banker J. Pierpont Morgan presenting the brooch to one of Mrs. Hay’s forebears.

Two pendant-necklaces from the Hay Collection were the objects of much interest. An Art Deco platinum, carved pink tourmaline necklace adorned with black onyx, pearls and diamonds by Cartier achieved $230,500, many times its estimate of $30,000-50,000. An unsigned platinum, diamond and carved emerald pendant-necklace sold for $218,500, far surpassing its estimate of $50,000-70,000.

Property from other collections and estates featured a mystery-set ruby and emerald flower clip-brooch by Van Cleef & Arpels. The brooch doubled its estimate of $60,000-80,000, selling for $158,500. Iconic VCA mystery-set jewelry is currently the subject of an exhibition at the Cooper-Hewitt, National Design Museum in New York.

A chemist looks at Kate’s sapphire ring

August 31st, 2011

I am taking a break from the elemental table today because unless you’ve been hiding under a rock for the past few months, you know that William and Kate are getting married today. Which means that traffic in London will be a nightmare, so everyone in the UK is getting a holiday.

Even though Kate will no doubt be given lots of diamonds in the next few months, I rather like her sapphire engagement ring (see above, right), so I am sharing this video where our favourite chemistry professor tells us about the chemistry of this famous ring. This ring, which formerly belonged to Princess Diana, is a 12-carat sapphire, surrounded by 14 white diamonds set in 18-carat white gold.

For those of you who are interested, here are a few facts about sapphires:

  • Sapphires are comprised of aluminum oxide with plenty of iron ions (as impurities), which gives the sapphire its lovely blue colour.
  • Sapphires are extremely hard, ranking 9 of 10 on the Mohs Scale of mineral hardness. They are second only to diamonds in hardness and are similarly resistant to chipping.
  • Sapphires are a variety of stone known as corundum and they come in every colour from blue to green to pink — red is the exception; red corundum is known as the ruby.

And now, for some myths and traditions about sapphires:

  • Sapphires are a traditional gift on a 5th and 45th wedding anniversary (I am eagerly awaiting mine).
  • Sapphires are the jewel of wisdom, truth, beauty and clarity.
  • Sapphire is the birthstone for September, symbolising clear thinking.
  • The most valuable and popular sapphire is a deep blue shade called “corn-flower blue.” No doubt, this sapphire has lots of iron impurities in it since this is what generates that coveted blue colour.

Gems of Sri Lanka

July 27th, 2011

An increasing global awareness of the economic potential of gemstones has created an unprecedented demand for them.  It has led to an accelerated production drive and an intensified search for them in gem producing countries

Sri Lanka ranks with Myanmar, Brazil, South Africa and Thailand as one of the world’s most important gem bearing nations.  The story of Sri Lanka’s gems is as old as civilization itself.

The gems of Sri Lanka are woven in to his history. The Mahavansa, the ancient chronicle of Sri Lanka too mentioned about gems and jewellery. Indeed, the lord Buddha himself is sad to have had to come to Sri Lanka from India to settle a dispute between two kings, Chulodara and Mahodara, over a throne of gems.

King Solomon is reported to have had gems brought from this island to win the heart of beautiful Queens. The great traveller, Marco Polo, Was said to have been so awe struck by a priceless ruby in the possession of the king of Sri Lanka that he recorded it has been “ span in length, without a flaw, brilliant beyond compare.

Sri Lanka became known as Ratna Deepa (The Island of Gems). Some of the rarest precious stones in the world are found in abundance in the reach earth under our feet and the hills above us. Sri Lanka, geologically speaking is a very old country. Ninety percent of the rocks of the island are of Precambrian age, 560 million to 2,400 million years ago. The gems form in sedimentary residual gem deposits, alluvial deposits, metamorphic deposits, skarn and calcium-rich rocks. Other gems are of magmatic origin. Out of about 200 minerals that are classified as gemstones, around 75 varieties are found in Sri Lanka, making this small island one of the most important geographic locations in the world of gemstones.

Among the Several world famous gems Sri Lanka’s blue sapphire Weighing 466 carats. The largest known sapphire in the world. Weighing in at 19kg was also discovered here. Other famous gems include the Blue giant of the Orient, Weighing nearly 500 carats and the bluebell of Asia, which weighs in at 400 carats. The renowned Sri Lankan Star sapphire is on permanent display at the Museum of Natural History in New York, but due to an oversight, the stone has been called the star of India.

Throughout history Sri Lanka’s gems and jewellery have adorned the crown jewels of many a royal family. A gem- a 105 carat cat’s eye- discovered in a paddy field in Sri Lanka, gained fame among the royalty of Britain and was Successively Admired by Edward VII, George V, Edward VIII and Queen Elizabeth.

The process of mining for gems is begun at an auspicious time with a short religious ritual. The most common methods of mining are in pits and by tunnelling. Surface gemming and dredging depends on the location and the type of deposits stones are normally found in a layer of coarse pebbly material, which contains traces of clay and fine sand. This gravel containing gems is referred to as “illam” and is found just below the alluvial deposits.
The rarest gem in the world Alexandrite is found in Sri Lanka.

Gem pits are of two kinds. the shallow ones are well shaped and circular, whereas deep pits are rectangular. To prevent the walls of the pits from caving-in scaffoldings are made and the spaces filled with leaves. The water is then pumped out of the pit. If the “illam” vein runs horizontally, tunnelling has to be resorted to.

Another method of collecting illam is to place wooden poles across the river bed and standing on a pole with a long stick, a person drags the gravelly sand towards him. This is then collected in buckets.

Either way the gravel is then washed in large circular wicker buckets by immersing them in water and rotating them. This enables the light, ordinary pebbles and sediment to escape, leaving the heavier pebbles behind. Then the baskets are held against the sunlight and the sorting is carried out. Each illam brings forth a variety of stones. The principal source of Alexandrite, the rarest gem in the world is Sri Lanka it was first pound in the Urals in 1830 and is named after Czar Alexander II who come of age on the day it was found. This stone shines green in natural light but turns raspberry red in artificial light.

The cat’s eye is another stone which is considered valuable and rare. It derives its name from fact that a silvery line runs across its greenish-gray surface, giving it a remarkable resemblance to the eye of a cat. The rarest type is the black cat’s eye.

Sri Lanka can boast of having 17 varieties of precious and semiprecious stone. The most notable are:-

Blue Sapphire blue stone with a silvery streak, said to protect its Wearer.

FACTS ABOUT RUBY

July 19th, 2011

It was believed wearing a fine red ruby bestowed good fortune on its owner – although the owner must have already had good fortune enough to possess such a rare and beautiful gemstone! Many people associate its brilliant crimson colors with passion and love, making Ruby an ideal choice for an engagement ring. Ruby is the red variety of the corundum mineral species, while all other colors of corundum are called Sapphire.

Ruby is mined throughout Southeast Asia. While Thailand and Myanmar (Burma) produce exquisite examples of this gemstone that the ancient Sinhalese people called “Ratnaraj,” the King of Gems.

This most sought after gemstone is available in a range of red hues, from purplish and bluish red to orangish red. Ruby is readily available in sizes up to 2 carats, but larger sizes can be obtained. However, in its finest quality, any size Ruby can be scare. In readily available small sizes, Ruby makes an excellent accent gemstone because of its intense, pure red color.

Despite all the best efforts of gemstone merchants to use technology to enrich color, fine ruby is still exceptionally rare. After being extracted from the earth, rubies today are commonly heated to high temperatures to maximize the purity and intensity of their red hue. Impurities may also dissolve or become less noticeable after heating. However, heating will only improve the color if the gemstone already contains the chemistry required. Occasionally rubies with small imperfections are permeated with a silicate bi product of the heating process, which helps to make small fissures less visible. This enhancement, like heating, is permanent and rubies, whether enhanced or not, remain among the most durable of gems.

Today a new method of artificially colouring the surface of paler rubies through the diffusion of beryllium, or a similar element, has made the red of ruby more affordable. Although this method is not yet common, in the future beryllium-diffused rubies may offer an affordable alternative to either untreated or heat-enhanced rubies, which are both much rarer. However, recutting or repolishing may affect the color of some beryllium-diffusion treated rubies.

Natural ruby shades vary from light to dark red and rubies often have undertones, such a  purplish cast. The variations add to the charm and individuality of each gemstone.

If you were born in July, ruby is your special birthstone, but ruby jewellery is a universal favourite. We associate the color red with the universal feelings of love and passion.

INTERESTING FACTS ABOUT GEMSTONES

A gemstone or gem (also called a precious or semi-precious stone, or jewel) is a piece of mineral, which, in cut and polished form, is used to make jewellery or other adornments. However certain rocks, (such as lapis lazuli) and organic materials (such as amber or jet) are not minerals, but are still used for jewellery, and are therefore often considered to be gemstones as well. Many gemstones are used in even the most expensive jewellery, depending on the brand name of the designer, fashion trends, market supply, treatments, etc. Nevertheless, diamonds, rubies, sapphires and emeralds still have a reputation that exceeds those of other gemstones.

Rare or unusual gemstones, generally meant to include those gemstones which occur so infrequently in gem quality that they are scarcely known except to connoisseurs, include andalusiteaxinite, cassiteriteclinohumite and beryl. Gems & Gemology

September 24th, 2010

Gems are very well known all over the world for their magnificent beauty and value. Not only do they add a beauty and charm into a person’s personality, but also may play a very significant role in shaping the present and future. They have a great importance in Vedic Astrology or the Science of Lights. It is now very well known that the light is composed of seven different rays, that is, Violet, Indigo, Blue, Green, Yellow, Orange, and Red. These rays are also a constituent of the pretty rainbow.

If the ancient Indian text, the “Karam Puran” is to be taken into account, then the seven planets are considered to be condensation of the above mentioned seven different coloured cosmic rays. The planet Earth was supposed to have on it the greatest condensation of the cosmic rays in the form of natural gem stones found on it. These gem stone s are present in a large variety and are believed to attract rays of different kinds towards them. This property of the gems makes them an ideal method to be used for reducing the sufferings that are led by mis-positioned planets in a person’s birth chart.

GEMS are precious stones which are loaded with specific energies. Gems may take in different colored rays and filter them all, but finally they keep a specific ray only. For example, Ruby is a gem in Dark Red color. This gem will filter all other colors except Red, which is accumulated into it. When we wear Ruby, we get the Red colored rays being absorbed into our body, and hence the effect of these rays will produce certain results. It has been experimentally proved that the Red color increases Will-power, Anger, Dynamism, Blood flow, and the Soul is strengthened. So it is better if the people with a lack of confidence and with feelings of inferiority wear this gem. The gems are connected to Planets in Astrology. Of course Astrology advocates that everything in this world is connected to Planets finally. What is the relation between gems and Planets? Each planet has a type of energy which is fully absorbed in a particular gem on the earth. Thus Sun’s energy is absorbed in Ruby, Moon’s energy is available in Pearl, Mars’s is in Coral, Jupiter’s is in Yellow Sapphire, Saturn’s energy is seen is Blue Sapphire, Mercury’s is in Emerald, Venus’s is in Diamond, Rahu’s is in Hessonite and Kethu’s is in Cat’s eye.

When there are any deficiencies in the energy levels of a Planet in a human being, the related problems concerned to that Planet will result. So it is wise to fill these deficient energies, by wearing gems. This is the route to achieve health, happiness and prosperity in life.

Ruby: Ruby is generally available in dark red, and glows like morning sun. Wearing a Ruby protects a person from afflictions of Sun, heart weakness, headaches, general ill health, eye troubles, blood pressure etc.

Pearl: It is in white color with a streak of oceanic blue. Wearing a pearl protects a person from diseases of lungs and stomach, water-born diseases, emotional problems, and impulsive decisions.
