 Astrology and Spirituality

 by Pandit Ajai Bhambi

 My Dear Revered Friends,

Mere Param Adarniya Mitron,

It is an honour to talk about the role of Astrology in the field of spirituality. For the first time this subject is being discussed on a global platform and spiritual Astrology is playing a pivotal role in World Peace.

From time immemorial Freewill vs. Fate has been debated and this process is likely to continue. Those who believe in Freewill are absolutely right when they say that they are free to do anything and they are the Doers. According to this understanding, if all of us are present in this august hall, then it is our freewill that has brought us here. Freewill enables each and every individual on this earth to be Buddha, Krishna, Jesus, Prophet Muhammad and so on. Despite these great examples and many theories in this world, not many people get enlightened. Those who follow the Karma theory strongly believe that if you are born on this planet then the role of Karma at a subtle level cannot be ruled out.

Astrology goes one step further. Within a particular time and space, the influence of celestial bodies cannot be ruled out. This can be easily seen especially in oriental mythology. If we take the story of Lord Ram, he goes through all kinds of agony, pain, turbulences and suffering before he actually kills his enemy Ravana and his clan. Rama and Krishna are our epic heroes and we learn that once on this planet, suffering and triumph follows in succession.

The same phenomenon can be seen in the life of Buddha; right from birth his father used all kind of powers and skills to protect him from the miseries of the world. After going through a penance of many years, Buddha becomes enlightened. The story of Jesus, Prophet Mohammed is the same. The theory of astrology believes that, within a framework, time and space are a binding factor and one can perform within certain limitations that have been set by time. Whenever man gets out of the range of time and space, then he becomes a universal entity.

When one looks at Krishna, Buddha, Jesus, Prophet Muhammed one can realize that none of them is walking on an isolated lane or road. It looks as if they are walking in space which they have covered and are accessible all over the world.  They have crossed the boundary of time and space. Astrology believes that time and space operates at two levels, personal as well as collective. Human beings create and categorize people in groups, races, creed, religion, regions etc. All the families, societies, cultures of this world teach good to their children.  Then why are negative traits visible in all human beings? Astrology believes that once you are born on this planet then you are under the direct electromagnetic field of planets and constellations. In the solar system there are mainly nine planets and 27 (twenty seven) constellations which influence each and every person on earth. Every constellation or ‘nakshatra’ has a set pattern of traits, characteristics, behavior pattern which covers both bad and good qualities. Every constellation or ‘nakshatra’ is further divided into four parts and if we multiply 27 into four then we get the figure 108 and this number has got a mysterious and spiritual value attached to it especially in oriental philosophy. The solar system, vibrations, sound and electromagnetic field will constantly keep playing a role at a subtle level. Due to the effect of the good qualities of the constellations, Man has made tremendous progress in his life. If all of us are sitting here with a special purpose of spreading peace, then we are also governed by the good influence of the celestial bodies. In the same way all of us are not free from the negative influences of the basic traits.  This is the reason that we spend very little time on our improvement. We go to churches, temples, mosques on a particular day and for a certain time and the rest of the days we are not concerned about the spiritual side of ourselves. Therefore when we visit these places we feel serene and sober and spiritual but that effect is gone as soon as we leave the place.

Astrology suggests that each and every individual on this planet should work on himself and see the basic negative traits that stop him from evolving, and that is why self manifestation does not take place easily.  The basic principle of Physics is that on this planet everything operates on the principle of friction. If I am standing in my place and you are sitting over there, it’s all due to friction. Whenever a rocket goes into space, gravitational force becomes zero and everything starts to fly. This world operates on the principle of duality – this can be seen at the physical level as well as at a higher level. At the physical level one sees day and night, man and woman, sorrow and happiness, good and bad, pain and pleasure and so on. If one works on his negativity at every level then one can cross the border of duality. Astrology also believes that within a certain time and space framework, both things will exist to a great extent unless and until one makes a valiant attempt or develops greater understanding to enter into the field of non-duality. In the case of Krishna, Buddha, Jesus etc., they have gone beyond the realm of space and time that is why their presence can be felt by everybody at every place and then time and space cease to exist and the influence of celestial bodies is totally nullified.

However within the time and space framework the impact of good and bad traits and behavior patterns can be felt at the optimum. The world has not forgotten the life graph of Osama bin Laden who terrorized the world, specially the USA, for many years. Therefore both possibilities, good and bad, exist in the same person, due to the influence of celestial bodies and constellations. Astrology helps you to thoroughly understand your positive and negative qualities and develop accordingly.

Astrology deeply believes in family and society and works on those principles very systematically. Astrology has been helping mankind from ages to evolve a consciousness.

Primarily three things are every important in astrology

  • ‘Nakshatras’ or Constellations,
  • Celestial bodies
  • Division of the zodiac.

Let us understand the importance of the division of the zodiac. We can assume that the entire zodiac is covered in this august hall, and the zodiac is of 360 degrees, and each house is of 30 degrees. Every house connects you with your confinement and possibilities and enables you to use either of them. Where I am standing, this is the first house and the first house starts with me and therefore represents myself and all the 12 houses are there to assist me and help me in the best possible way. I am the pivotal point and everything revolves around me. Therefore the choice lies with me; I can create heaven or hell.

The second house is just 30 degrees away and this represents family, income and speech at large. Every man needs family support right from the beginning to the end and this support is very important. To breathe in this world, you need to earn money and the third very important aspect of this house is your speech. A man or woman is the total sum of what he utters in his life and the manner in which he says it. His rise and fall is also largely dependent on his speech.

After the second house is the third house that covers 60 degrees. The third house represents your prowess, expansion, brothers and sisters, neighbours and so on. The influence of your brothers, sisters, neighbours and communication is immense on your personality throughout your life. It also plays an important role to define you in totality. Since this house also deals with expansion, you can expand yourself unlimitedly. Perhaps that is the reason about 2500 years back a young man from Greece believed that he could conquer the world with a small army – and he became Alexander the Great.

The fourth house is the source; it represents Mother, peace of mind, sound sleep, comfort zone, happiness. Half of medical science is working on how to provide peace of mind and sound sleep to half the world.   This house also represents the place where you live and if you can generate love, peace, harmony, serenity which you can spread all around, then you can play a big role in creating harmony in this world.

The fifth house is a very important house because it provides you two types of creations, one physical and two mental. With physical ability you can create someone like you. This means you can be a father or mother to your child. By using your mental ability you can give birth to yourself. These creations can confine you for a long period of time or can liberate you instantly.

The sixth house gives a different picture of each and everyone on this earth. This house depicts your enemies, confinements, diseases, cures, enemies and opponents, competitors etc. All the areas which have been mentioned  have the ability to either engage you or liberate you for the rest of your life. Invariably it has been noticed that people get entangled with their enemies, opponents, diseases, confinement etc. and their whole life is wasted.

The seventh house is just opposite from where I am i.e. 180 degree away from me i.e. the first house. This house represents the spouse and it is just equal and opposite. This also defines that astrology gives equality to spouse, wife or husband, no one is big and no one is small. When two people of equal status meet with each other, that lays down the perfect condition of creativity and self evolvement. But for many people in this world this house also plays the role of a confinement. Besides spouse this house also deals with day to day activities. Our activities of today decide the result of tomorrow.

The eighth house directly deals with death and life after death, mystery of life and secrets of this world. The sages in their wisdom have very appropriately defined the house of death. After the long lasting union with your spouse or partner, you will never be the same as you were earlier. In a way it is the death of the previous person in you. No one remains the same after a long lasting union with their partner. When you are ready to die then all the mysteries or secrets of this world are ready to reveal themselves.

The ninth house denotes the religious and spiritual side of your being, your luck, your destiny and also gives you hope of creating your own destiny. It depends on you whether you want to be an achiever on the materialistic side or the spiritual side. Astrology is primarily based on mathematics and consists of all the branches of this subject. Algebra and trigonometry are widely used to understand the importance of houses. The first, fifth and ninth houses make a triangle. The first house indicates self, the fifth house denotes creation and the ninth house indicates luck. When all the three things are in coordination, then man can be the master of his own destiny and can even get salvation.

The tenth house is the house of ‘karma’ or action. You can do all kinds of actions under the Sun: this is what this house reveals. The beauty of this house is that in the scheme of things, it comes after the house of luck. Your luck is left behind and now you are in the realm of your karma and with your effort and karma you can reach any heights. Recently the world has seen a man short in stature just 5 ft 4 inches with his non-violent peaceful ‘satyagrah’ , Anshan has given a new thought to the world in the 21st century. Anna Hazare’s recently concluded fast has shown the world that if you are peaceful inside, you automatically spread peace. When violence ceases within, you have no option but to spread non-violence. When you have no hatred inside then nobody can see even a trace of hatred in your attitude or behavior. If one wants to spread peace, love, harmony in this world then it must start emanating from the person himself. This house gives the opportunity to reach the zenith of one’s karma. This house in astrology is called zenith or mid-heaven.

The eleventh house represents huge gains. All the worldly wealth can be at your disposal if you have the desire to achieve it. Bill Gates, Dhirubhai Ambani and many more have shown this to the world.

The last house is the twelfth house in the scheme of the zodiac and is a very, very important house. Primarily this house indicates loss, one’s exit and it represents hell and heaven that one has created for himself. First of all whatsoever you have gained in this world you are going to lose one day – wealth, health everything. Worldly achievements are small because one is going to lose his life also. On a spiritual plane this house indicates hell and heaven. If one has led a meaningless life then he is heading for hell and if you have created heaven then all the doors are open and heaven is extending its arms to welcome you. The only thing is that you have to put back your slate as you received it. Kabir has said “jyon ki tyon, rakh deeni chadariya” – “Got this life used it utilized it, left it as it is without messing it up”. Before death all individuals see the flashback of their life and know for sure what right and wrong they have committed and accordingly their next birth is decided.

Astrology indicates that you are an absolutely resourceful person with all kinds of resources at your disposal. The moot point is whether you used your resources or misused them; that will reflect in your personality. Astrology also tells you the points which help you in your growth and development and negative points which hamper all future possibilities. Vedas were the first scriptures of mankind and all four Vedas provides a full map of the materialistic and spiritualistic side.

Five thousand years back, Vedas made a very bold statement that astrology is an “eye” and it further explained that without the help of astrology one cannot understand the real meaning of Vedas. The importance of “eye” can be defined in many ways but the best possible could be that the eyes are the mirror of the soul. The same importance is given to astrology by the Vedas. One can spread non-violence only when non-violence ceases inside – no hatred, no envy, no anger, no jealousy, no selfishness – then one can automatically spread peace. A peaceful man can spread peace as one has seen in the case of Anna Hazare. During his thirteen day fast he was peaceful, relaxed and cool, keeping his temper intact and he has given a new message to the world that to spread peace one must be peaceful within. Astrology helps to know ones plus and minus points. The moment one eliminates his minus points then one can go beyond the framework of time and space and become like Krishna, Buddha, Jesus and so on.

I would like to thank The World Spiritual Parliament and the Organisers for giving me this opportunity to present some of my thoughts before this august gathering.

GEMSTONES AND ASTRO POWER

August 2nd, 2011

According to ancient VEDIC Astrology, natural gemstones transmit astral powers like radio crystals transform sound! Fine flawless gems promote good fortune, while poor gems have the opposite effect. The power of gems emanates from the nine planets (nava-graha) recognised by the ancient Asian, “Sideral science of Astrology”.

Gemstones strengthen planetary powers and will boost their specific influences in three ways. First way is by adding ‘cosmic color’ to one’s own aura. The second by ‘astrologically’ enhancing associated areas of one’s life. Third way is by attracting the attention of their ruling planetary deities

The five methods of choosing gemstones:

The first is determined by one’s birth ‘rasi’ or zodiac (Moon) sign.

The Second method is based on one’s birth constellation or ‘naksatra’.

The third choice is based on one’s lagna or ‘rising sun’.

The forth way to choose one’s planetary gem is based on preferences. If a person is attracted to the influence of a particular stone, and provided it isn’t a dangerous planetary gem or harmful in their horoscope then one can use the gem for one’s liking.

The fifth and most specific method is based on the prescription of a qualified ‘Astrologer’. The astrologer on the basis of birth horoscope studies the position of nine planets. And determine which planet(s) would be most beneficial to strengthen. Time periods for using certain gemstones may also be prescribed based on one’s Mahadasa or ‘major planetary periods’, Antardasha or ‘sub-periods’, as well as other astrological considerations.

In Tantra Sara, a major tantrik scripture, the human body is stated to be an island of nine gems. These nine gems known as nav-ratnas correspond with the nine dhatus (ingredients) of which the human body is composed. The Tantra Sara gives a clear statement of their correspondence to the nav-ratnas, which is very helpful in understanding the relationship of gems with the human organism. Wearing these gems influences the dhatus and the psychophysical well-being.

The puranas present beautiful stories about the origin of gems and their relationship with the nine planets. The nav-ratna (nine gems) is divided into two groups:-Precious and Semi-precious. Diamond, pearl, Ruby, Blue-Sapphire and Emerald are precious gems whereas hessonite, yellow sapphire, cat’s eye and coral fall in the category of semi-precious gems. This division is based neither on the market value of the gems nor on their brilliance, lustre or durability but on their utility and their influence on the human psyche, body, chemistry and electromagnetic field.

It is always advisable to wear the rings of different gems on different fingers. As a general rule, the ring finger is the best for wearing rings, but as each finger is related to a particular planet, the ring should be worn on the finger connected with the planet .This belief is quite popular and sometimes we see people wearing rings on many fingers. There is also distinction between the right and left hand: the right hand is solar and the left hand is lunar. If a person seeks balance in life then he has to wear a ring with the gem, related with the planets Sun, Mars, Saturn, Rahu and Ketu on the left hand(i.e. solar gems on the lunar hand). The gems related with Moon, Mercury, Venus and Jupiter should be worn on the right hand. Hence wearing gems on the appropriate fingers, would bring good health, prosperity, name and fame, saves one from wild animals, accidents, evil effects of poison and negative effects of ill-aspected planets.

Astrology of Gemstones

October 12th, 2010

The Vedic seers knew that man is born in this world to experience his Karmas. Good Karmas manifest their effects as happy and auspicious events and bad Karmas as sickness, deficiencies, sorrows, losses accidents etc.

The sages being sympathetic towards humanity envisaged the methods of overcoming sorrows to any extent possible. With this in view they added two auxiliary branches to the Vedas. These are called the Ayurveda and other remedial methods. Ayurveda is the Vedic method of detecting the disease under three major heads called Kapha (Phlegm), Vata (Gout, Rheumatic pains), and Pitta or (bilious troubles). Various herbs and roots, which go to cure these three types of maladies, consist of Ayurveda (Life science).

The seers also knew that Diseases and maladies can be seen in advance by astrology and preventive action can be taken to neutralize or reduce the impact.

For this purpose thy prescribed five methods known as Mantra, Yantra, Tantra, Mani (Gems), Moolika.

All the Gems are known under a single name ‘MANI’.

As we know matter is condensed energy. The seers found the colors of the planets and the gems, which inherit those colors. They also found that wearing the appropriate gem helps to enhance the power of a Good planet and reduce the maleficence of bad ones.

The zodiacal signs have been distributed among the planets

  • Sun rules Leo Gem=Ruby
  • Moon rules Cancer (Pink Color) Gem = Ruby
  • Mars is the ruler of Both Aries and Scorpio (Red color) = Coral
  • Mercury rules Gemini and Virgo (Green) = Emerald
  • Jupiter rules Sagittarius and Pisces (golden yellow) = Yellow Sapphire
  • Venus rules Taurus and Libra (Shining White) = Diamond
  • Saturn rules Capricorn and Aquarius (dark Blue or Black) = Blue sapphire
  • Rahu (Cow dung) & Ketu (Grayish) have no ruler-ship. Hessonite and Cats -Eye

Besides these major gems there are a number of lesser-valued ones called semi precious stones which are also equally effective. In all there are 84 varieties of gems and precious stones.

When a planet as lord of the ascendant becomes weak, then the concerned gem of the owner of the sign of the ascendant is prescribed as a remedy to strengthen the weak planet.

Similarly when a benefic planet becomes weak due to its placement in the sign of debility or in inimical house or hemmed between the malefic etc the appropriate Gem of that planet is prescribed as remedy.

Some times the malefic such as Saturn, Mars, Sun, Rahu or Ketu become powerful and Become significators of evil houses. In such cases are also the appropriate gem is prescribed as remedy.

Just as Plants have gems they also have metals Viz. Sun = Copper, Moon =lead, Mars = Bronze, Mercury = Brass, Jupiter = Gold, Venus =silver, Saturn = Iron. Rings are generally made of the appropriate metal.

The fingers of the hand:

  • Index = Jupiter
  • Middle = Saturn and Rahu
  • Ring finger = Sun, Moon, Mars
  • Little finger = Venus and Mercury, and Ketu

The rings should be worn in the appropriate finger. When all the nine gems are cast in a single frame it goes under the name of NAVARATNA and can be worn in a golden ring in the ring finger or as a locket around the neck

Procedure for wearing a Gem:

The days of the week are also named after the planets because a particular planet holds sway on a particular day. A gem is to be worn on the day, which is most powerful for it.

Sunday is Sun’s day.

Monday is Moon’s day

 Tuesday is Mars day

 Wednesday is Mercury day

 Thursday is Jupiter day

 Friday is Venus day

Saturday is Saturn’s Day

Rahu is akin to Saturn and Ketu is akin to Mars. These two days can be used for Rahu and Ketu. The first hour of the day after sunrise is the ideal time to wear a Gem. When the Gem is ready for wearing it must be kept in raw cow’s milk overnight and Washed in the morning with water alone and put in the altar. The concerned deity to be invoked and incenses shown and some small offering of Milk sweets made. After this formality it can be worn. This gives best effect. Gems are said to lose power in 5 years time. There is no authentic evidence to support this theory. A good gem should last forever as we see it with diamonds like ‘Kohinoor’ or the ‘Hope diamond’.

Moonstone Gem Facts

March 29th, 2010

Despite the belief that moonstone fell from the sky, the gem comes from earth. Moonstone is a member of the orthoclase feldspar mineral family. It is a combination of potassium aluminum silicate. The stones have a crystal structure that shimmers when the light hits them. The shimmer effect is called adularescence. Moonstone jewelry is cut into a smooth cabochon shape to enhance the effect.

Moonstones are translucent with a sheen that resembles pearls and opals. The gems come in a variety of colors–white, gray, peach, pink, yellow, blue and green. Some types are completely transparent and others are colorless. Rainbow moonstone, which is an iridescent white or gray with a blue sheen in the light, is the most popular type. The higher quality moonstones have a high degree of shimmer.

Moonstone is found in Sri Lanka, Brazil, Madagascar, India, Germany, Tanzania, Mexico, Australia and the United States. The rarest forms of moonstone originate in Sri Lanka.

Moonstone Lore
Moonstone lore crosses cultures. The ancient Greeks called the gem Aphroselene in honor of the goddesses Aphrodite and Selene. The Romans claimed the goddess Diana could be seen in every moonstone. In ancient Asia, they believed the gem was a solid ray of moonlight filled with good spirits. Moonstone was revered in India as a symbol of the third eye. Europeans gazed into moonstone to invoke prophetic dreams during the Middle Ages. Moonstone has also been associated with the Archangel Haniel, whose name means Glory of God. Most goddess lore ties to the gem.

Known as talisman for protection, health and good fortune, moonstone was called the traveler’s stone, it was used for protection on journeys. Many believed that the gem calmed anxiety and promoted harmonious relationships.

Couples wore the gem to help them have a happy future without strife. It was also believed that two people could fall passionately in love if they saw each other during a full moon while one of them wore moonstone. In fact, during Victorian times, moonstone rings were often used as engagement rings.

Some stories say that one could predict the future if you placed moonstone in your mouth and gazed at a full moon. Amulets of moonstone were also hung in fruit trees to encourage an abundant harvest season.

Moonstone has always been connected with femininity and motherhood. Many believed the gems healed feminine health problems such as menstrual cramps or infertility and protected the health of pregnant women. Moonstone is also one of the birthstones for June, along with pearl and alexandrite.

Today moonstone is still connected with ancient lore. While many simply wear the moonstone for decoration, others use moonstone for talismans, healing and spiritual purposes. Moonstone gem facts include both medicinal and metaphysical uses.

Medicinal Properties
Moonstone is sometimes incorporated in healing therapy for the following health concerns:

Reduces stress or anxiety
Treats female hormone imbalance
Helps menstrual problems and relieves premenstrual syndrome
Increases fertility
Enhances libido
Prevents epileptic seizures
Cures digestive issues
Rids the body of toxins
Gets rid of a headache
Prevents sun stroke
Stops a nose bleed
Practiced for centuries, some people still use moonstone for medicinal purposes.

Moonstone

March 29th, 2010

Moonstones are a form of silicate from the feldspar group. They are examples of the commonest mineral in the earth’s crust and are found in a wide variety of rocks. Their chemical composition can be written as the general formula X(Al,Si) 4O8 in which the X may be either Calcium, Sodium, Potassium or Barium. Moonstones in particular belong to the orthoclase feldspar group, found in igneous rocks such as pegmatites and granites or in crystalline schists and veins and in particular sedimentary ore deposits. The best known moonstones are found in Switzerland, Piedmont Italy. Moonstones have a translucency and a greyish white color that looks as if you are actually viewing the Moon on a cloudy night.

According to Indian astrology, moonstones are also known as chandramanis or the semi-precious stone for Moon. People wear a moonstone to propitiate a negative Moon in the birthchart, or at times even if the Sun is found in a powerful but negative position, as it then provides a cooling effect.

Wearing a moonstone brings about peace of mind , the ability to concentrate, the fruition of love and prevention from betrayals in love and marriage The waxing and waning of the Moon, a fundamental part of the astrological system, plays an important role in the determination of our destinies. Contrary to popular belief, the lunar phases of darkness that can creep into one’s stellar chart in the form of the umbras and penumbras of rahu and ketu (Moon’s nodes) merit close attention and treatment. More on the Moon’s nodes.

The moonstone plays the same role as the pearl in gem therapy, with one major difference: it is capable of causing a great deal of cooling that may result in the wearer being exposed to health ailments associated with colds and chills. Therefore it is better to wear the moonstone only in conjunction with another stone that is capable of producing heat, or associated with stellar bodies that are heat-generating, like the planet Mars (coral) or Sun (ruby). Ideally moonstones should be worn set in silver, with a stone of minimum weight of 5 and a quarter rattis on the little finger of the left hand. [One rattika = 0.59 metric carats. – ed.]
